POS hardware UAE: what each type of business needs
A POS machine is rarely one machine. It is a small set of devices that each do one job well, and the right set for a busy kitchen looks nothing like the right set for a salon.
Shopping for POS hardware in the UAE can feel like assembling furniture without the picture on the box. Suppliers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah offer terminals, tablets, printers and screens in every size, and it is easy to buy too much or, worse, the wrong thing. This guide walks through each device, what it is for, and which ones a restaurant, café, shop, salon or laundry actually needs on day one.
The POS machine and the devices around it
Think in roles rather than products. Someone takes the order, someone prepares it, someone takes the money, and the customer gets a receipt. Each role needs a screen or a printer, and some devices cover two roles at once.
Counter terminals
The main till. A fixed touchscreen terminal, such as our 15.6-inch POS terminal (EXN-H1101), suits a busy counter where several staff share one station all day. Where space is tight, a tablet POS with a built-in printer (EXN-H1602) does the same job on a smaller footprint. Look for a screen large enough to read the full basket, a solid stand, and enough ports for the printer and cash drawer.
Self-order kiosks
Kiosks let walk-in customers order for themselves, which shortens queues at quick-service counters. They come floor-standing, like our EXN-H1402, or compact for a counter top, like the EXN-H1401. A kiosk earns its place where queues are long and the menu is simple to browse; at a small café it may never pay for itself.
Kitchen displays and kitchen printers
Orders have to reach the kitchen. A kitchen display, such as our EXN-H1501, shows each order on the right station with a timer, and is easy to read across a hot line. A kitchen printer, such as the 80 mm kitchen cloud printer (EXN-H1202), prints a ticket instead. Many kitchens use both: screens on the hot line, a printer at the bar or the dessert station.
Waiter handhelds
A handheld lets staff take the order at the table and send it straight to the kitchen, without walking back to the counter. Our waiter handheld with printer (EXN-H1601) also prints the bill at the table.
Receipt and label printers, cash drawers and scanners
- Receipt and label printer: prints tax invoices, and labels for products, takeaway orders or garment tags. Our 80 mm receipt & label printer (EXN-H1201) handles both.
- Cash drawer: opens when a cash sale is completed, so cash is only handled at the right moment. Our cash drawer is the EXN-H1301.
- Barcode scanner: essential in retail for fast, accurate checkout and stock counts. Our 2D handheld scanner (EXN-H1302) reads printed barcodes and QR codes.
What each type of business needs
The table below is a starting point for a single site. Busy sites add more of the same; quieter ones can often combine roles on one device.
| Business | Core devices | Often added |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant | POS terminal (EXN-H1101), kitchen display (EXN-H1501), receipt printer (EXN-H1201), cash drawer (EXN-H1301) | Waiter handhelds (EXN-H1601), kitchen printer (EXN-H1202), floor-standing kiosk (EXN-H1402) |
| Café | Tablet POS with printer (EXN-H1602), kitchen printer (EXN-H1202), cash drawer (EXN-H1301) | Compact kiosk (EXN-H1401), a wall screen for order-ready numbers |
| Retail shop | POS terminal (EXN-H1101), 2D scanner (EXN-H1302), receipt & label printer (EXN-H1201), cash drawer (EXN-H1301) | A second scanner for stock counts, a customer-facing screen |
| Salon | Tablet POS with printer (EXN-H1602) or POS terminal (EXN-H1101), cash drawer (EXN-H1301) | A tablet at reception for guest check-in |
| Laundry | POS terminal (EXN-H1101), receipt & label printer (EXN-H1201) for tickets and garment tags, cash drawer (EXN-H1301) | A second label printer for a busy drop-off counter |
Buying new or bringing your own devices
Some POS systems only run on their own hardware. Others run in a web browser, which means a tablet, laptop or desktop you already own can do some of the work. That can cut the cost of getting started, especially for a back office or a manager’s screen.
The EXO NODES apps run in the browser and install like an app. The POS runs as a web app and on Windows as an installed web app, with an Android build in progress and iOS on the roadmap. The kitchen display runs on a wall tablet or screen, and the back office runs on any computer. So a recent tablet or PC you already have may be enough to start, and you buy dedicated hardware where a role needs it.
Bringing your own device makes sense for back-office work, the manager’s view and light counters. Buying dedicated hardware makes sense at the front line, where devices are knocked, splashed and used for twelve hours a day. Consumer tablets are not built for a kitchen pass, and a printer that jams at the peak costs more than it saved.
What to check before you buy POS hardware
- Compatibility: confirm the software supports the exact device, printer and drawer before you pay.
- Printing in Arabic: tax invoices may need Arabic text, so test a printed receipt in both languages.
- Paper width: 80 mm receipts are the common standard and leave room for the details a tax invoice needs.
- Warranty and replacement: how long is the warranty, and how quickly is a failed device replaced?
- Network: kitchen printers and screens depend on your local network, so plan a reliable router and sensible cabling.
- Power: put the till, router and printer on a small backup power supply so a short cut does not end service.
- Cleaning and heat: kitchen devices need to cope with heat, steam and grease.
On price, hardware is usually a one-off purchase quoted separately from the software subscription. We quote ours in the proposal, once we know the site and the roles to cover.
Questions owners ask
Can I use an ordinary tablet as a POS machine?
Often, yes, if the software runs in a browser or has an app for that tablet. It works well for light counters and managers. For a busy front line, a dedicated terminal or a tablet POS with a printer is more durable.
Do I need a kitchen display or will a printer do?
A printer is simpler and cheaper to start with. A kitchen display adds timers and a clear view of what is waiting, which helps as volume grows. Many kitchens mix both.
How many terminals does one branch need?
Count the points where money changes hands at your busiest hour. One counter usually needs one terminal; a second is worth it if the queue regularly builds. Remember that waiter handhelds also take orders.
Is POS hardware bought or rented?
Both models exist. Buying costs more at the start and less over time; renting spreads the cost but usually comes with a minimum term. Compare the total over three years.
